Case Study - CIS Onsite helps with a company's Worker's Compensation concerns

In the August 2003 edition, we presented a case study which discussed the effectiveness of our on-site services for a major baking company in Illinois. Here's a look at how CIS Onsite changed another company's Worker's Compensation woes in one year:

A major testing company of 400 employees in Cedar Rapids, Iowa contracted with CIS Onsite to start a safety program. The goals of this program were to:

1) Reduce work-related injuries
2) Reduce the costs associated with these injuries, and
3) Increase the quality of care for those workers who are injured on the
job.

In order to meet these goals, CIS Onsite has provided a variety of services:

1) Job-specific ergonomic analysis
2) Individualized employee stretching programs
3) Onsite Early Intervention Program to treat minor sprains and strains, and
4) Onsite therapy for employees when prescribed by a physician.

In the year since the implementation of the safety program, they have met or exceeded all of its goals. The following table presents these dramatic statistics:

Result (from 2002 to 2003)
Total WC Claims 21% decrease
Total Dollar Loss 53% decrease
w/ Indirect Costs 53% decrease
Avg. Loss/Claim 41% decrease
Recordable Injuries 41% decrease
Recordable Injury Rate per 100 employees 42% decrease
Restricted Duty Claims 35% decrease
Restricted Duty Days 57% decrease
Lost-time Days 48% decrease
Lost-time Claims 65% decrease
Lost-time Injury Rate per 100 employees 66% decrease

Winter Workout Gear

Though March is soon approaching, the winter temperatures just don't want to let up. So when it comes to exercise during this time of year, you can exercise indoors and glare at the same scenery on the treadmill or brave the cold and enjoy the changing scenery on the path.

My choice would be to brave the cold weather. Cold weather clothing includes synthetic materials like polypropylene. No cotton at all. Cotton gets wet from sweat, and it stays wet. You get cold because the wet cotton is against your skin and you lose body heat.

Polypropylene, and other synthetics like it (e.g. Bergelene) wick moisture from your skin and dries very quickly. You stay warm because your clothing stays dry, and if you wear layers, the heat from your body will get captured between the layers. You will not only stay dry, but warm. It really works. You can wear a polypro T-shirt followed by another heavier layer, followed by a shell to keep wind out. You can also buy polypro leggings, underwear, hats, neck gaiters (these really keep you warm), gloves, and socks if you need to.

That might be overkill, but you can always remove a layer or two. That's one of the good things about layers; you can remove and put them on as you need to (layers of synthetic wicking clothing will work in temperatures from 100 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 degrees below zero). It's what all winter campers and mountaineers wear.

The other thing is that you can exercise outside and then finish your activity near your home if necessary so you don't have to stay out too long when you're done. But either way, with the synthetic clothing you will be warm and it will permit you to exercise outdoors.

Think Safe! - Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls

Slips, trips, and falls are a leading cause of accidental injury and death both at work and at home. More than 7 million Americans are treated for fall-related injuries in hospital emergency rooms every year, and nearly 14,000 die each year from fall-related injuries.

WHAT TO DO AT WORK
  • Keep floors, stairways, and walkways free of trash, clutter, tools, and other obstacles.
  • Clean up or report spills right away
  • Wear shoes with slip-resistant soles
  • Never carry a load that blocks your vision
  • Always use a ladder or step stool- never a box or a chair
  • Set up ladders properly. Place the bottom of a straight ladder out at least 1/4 of the ladder's height.
  • Never stand on the top rung or step of a ladder
  • Don't overreach when on a ladder. Reposition the ladder instead.

  WHAT TO DO AT HOME
  • Keep stairways free of clutter. Equip them with handrails- and use them!
  • Use a rubber bath mat in the bathtub. Place non-skid bath mats outside the tub and install grab bars in the tub.
  • Clean up spills promptly. Avoid walking on freshly waxed or washed floors.
  • Provide good lighting on stairs, in hallways, and in bathrooms.
  • Use ladders safely- just as you would at work.
